Nissan’s Destination Frontier Is A Rugged Truck Designed For Overlanding

Honda isn’t the only automaker attending this year’s Overland Expo West as Nissan has unveiled the one-off Destination Frontier.

Billed as a “highly capable, high-quality overlanding truck built on a budget,” the Destination Frontier has been equipped with an assortment of goodies that makes it ideal for camping in remote areas.

Based on the Frontier Crew Cab Midnight Edition, the truck features a Hefty Fabworks front bumper with an integrated Warn winch and auxiliary lights. Elsewhere, designers installed extended fender flares, skid plates and rock sliders. The truck has also been equipped with a 3-inch lift kit and American Racing wheels that are wrapped in 33-inch Nitto Trail Grappler off-road tires.

Since the Destination Frontier was designed with camping in mind, the model has a roof-mounted Leitner Designs bed rack and a CVT Mt. Shasta tent. The truck also has a Rhino Rack Pioneer Tray, WeatherTech floor mats and a Dometic refrigerator / freezer. Rounding out the highlights are jerry cans and recovery boards.

Like the standard model, the Destination Frontier is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 261 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) and 281 lb-ft (381 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a five-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system.

While the truck is technically a one-off, fans could build their own version of the Destination Frontier for around $40,000. That would make it slightly more affordable than the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.

According to Nissan North America’s director of light commercial vehicles, Tiago Castro, “This special Destination Frontier is designed to do two things: first, demonstrate Frontier’s durability, quality and reliability, even when traveling to remote destinations. And second, to help democratize the overlanding experience by showing a more affordable approach to the sport.”
