Top Gear Takes An In-Depth Look At The New McLaren GT

Shortly after the McLaren GT was unveiled to the world, Top Gear were offered an up-close look of the latest vehicle to join the McLaren family.

Powering the McLaren GT is the company’s familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine first seen in the 720S. However, this engine has been modified with new parts, including different pistons, to provide a broader torque curve and better low-end grunt. The key figures you need to know are 612 hp and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) of twisting force.

The McLaren GT is underpinned by a MonoCell II-T monocoque which incorporates a carbon fiber rear upper structure and offers 14.8 cubic feet (420 liters) of luggage space below the tailgate. There is also 5.3 cubic feet (150 liters) of storage in the front, bringing total capacity up to 20.1 cubic feet (570 liters). McLaren says a set of golf clubs and luggage or two pairs of skis plus boots and luggage can fit into the car.

Inside, the GT is very similar to other models in the McLaren family and features the same basic design. Some of the key interior highlights include a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkens premium audio system with carbon fiber sub-base woofers and Kevlar mid-range drive units. There are also bespoke seats with heating and the company’s best infotainment system to date which incorporates HERE navigation mapping and real-time traffic information.

McLaren says the GT is a direct rival to vehicles like the Aston Martin DB11 V8, Ferrari Portofino, and Porsche 911 Turbo S. It also sits in a distinct pillar in the McLaren range alongside the Sports Series, Super Series, and Ultimate Series range of vehicles.
