KOLKATA:
Calcutta University (CU) has instructed principals of affiliated colleges to complete the
admission process to their undergraduate courses by the first week of July and start classes immediately after so that teachers and students get a full semester to complete the syllabus. The university has also asked the principals of its 160-odd affiliated colleges not to exceed the sanctioned intake capacity to prevent any cash-for-admission malpractice.
The admission schedule and academic calendar for UG courses in the 2019-20 academic session also state that colleges must strictly conduct all admissions online and all communication with candidates should be via emails or text messages till they secure admission. The students should not visit the campus while the admission process is underway.
Even the payment of application fee or admission fee must be via e-payment or through designated banks. The students will have to upload all their marksheets and other documents when applying. If colleges feel the need to verify them, they will have to do it when students report for classes.
“The advisory underlines some important aspects of admission and sets a time limit for wrapping up the process so that classes start on time,” said a member of the Councils For Undergra-duate Studies of Calcutta University.
Last year, the admission process dragged till the first week of September due to multiple hurdles. This year the process will start soon after the Higher Secondary results are published and colleges will have to publish the merit list by June 10. Admissions will start from June 12. “We have requested colleges to adhere to the deadline so there is consistency. Classes in all the colleges can then start on time and students will get an opportunity to complete the syllabus before exams. Since everything will be online, this will also ensure that nobody has the opportunity to fleece students by promising admission,” said a university official.
“We request all applicants to be very careful while filling up the form and listing marks. Any wrong information will lead to cancellation of admission,” said the principal of a central Kolkata college.
