The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested two women in connection with the murder of a 51-year-old businessman in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar for objecting to indecent remarks directed at his daughter.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj said the wife and daughter of the accused were arrested for their involvement in the crime. The accused and his son were arrested earlier.
The victim’s family also met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday afternoon. “We met him and narrated the whole incident. He said he had spoken to the Commissioner of Police and ensured justice. He also asked what we expect from him. We asked if my grandson can get a government job to help his mother in future. He ensured help in the matter,” said the victim’s 83-year-old father.
Along with the victim’s father, wife and daughter, Janata Dal (United) leader K.C. Tyagi and rebel Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kapil Mishra were present during the meeting with the Home Minister.
Meanwhile, the victim’s son is still under intensive observation at a hospital.
The family on Wednesday evening carried out a candle march at India Gate to demand justice.
Senior cops assure help
Ms. Bhardwaj and Joint Commissioner of Police Madhup Tiwari also met the family and assured them of all possible help. The police have also written to the Delhi State Legal Services Authority for compensation for the family.
The victim was allegedly murdered for standing up to those passing lewd comments at his daughter.
Union Minister and former Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel also called on the Home Minster to demand “swift punishment” for those behind the murder.
“Besides this case, there are others like the Rupesh Basoya, Ankit Saxena and Dr. Pankaj Narang cases where murders took place on the streets, and hence the police need to take strict action so that no such incidents are repeated,” Mr. Goel said.
The Minister also raked up the issue of Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees, who, he alleged, were behind the “rise in crime” in the Capital. He also attacked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s “silence” on the issue. “Mr. Kejriwal has all the time in the world to comment on every other national issue and issues of other States; this time he has chosen to remain silent to protect his vote bank,” Mr. Goel added.
