Suspected gunman's movements traced after South Yarra hit

Police have released the movements of a suspected gunman behind what was believed to have been a pre-arranged hit in a South Yarra park last month.

Daniel 'Dodge' Wayne O'Shea, 41, was found gunned down in Fawkner Park about 7.40pm on April 26.

Two guns, believed to be linked to the shooting, were found the next day by children playing nearby.

Police on Thursday revealed the suspected hitman walked along Toorak Road carrying a red and white Coles shopping bag before disappearing into Como Park about 30 minutes after the shooting.

CCTV footage was used to trace the man's movements, but his face was concealed by a bright green baseball cap.

It's not known why Mr O'Shea, from Carnegie, was in the park but investigators believe it was for a pre-arranged meeting.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, the officer in charge of the homicide squad, said someone in the community would know who the man in the green cap is.

"I understand that there are people, especially those with connections in the criminal underworld, who feel they don't want to get involved in these incidents," he said.

"But regardless of the circumstances, someone has been murdered. We have a mother who has lost a son, people have lost a partner or a friend."

He stressed that anyone with information could tip police off anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

"All we need is a name and again, I'd urge anyone out there who can provide that detail to us to do so."

Police are also asking anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage, or who may have seen the man in the green cap, to come forward.

O'Shea, who was known to his friends as 'Dodge', had survived a previous attempt on his life about three years ago, when two prominent underworld figures fired upon him and an associate.

In 2010, he served jail time for wounding a man at Fairfield Boathouse.
