COIMBATORE: City corporation officials on Tuesday seized 8kg banned plastic items from the stalls at the ongoing government exhibition on Prison Ground in the city.
Sanitary inspector Ramu, whose team conducted the inspection, said such raids would continue till the use of banned plastic items comes to an end. "The banned plastic items were mostly found in stalls like eateries, fancy stores and shops that sell children toys. The usage of banned plastic items has come down considerably in the city, but it could be reduced further," the inspector said.
The shopkeepers were warned, and no penalty was slapped against them, a member of the inspection team said.
A couple of days ago, corporation commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath had conducted a meeting with civic body officials, traders and environmentalists to discuss the ways to curb usage of banned plastic items in the city. During the meeting, the commissioner had assured his help to find alternatives to plastics and said the ban should be strictly implemented.
