Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran director Adoor Gopalakrishnan feels that children should rather watch and appreciate films at this young age rather than being evaluated for making films.
The master auteur did not try a bit to hide his disapproval over the practice of awarding children for the films they make while inaugurating the concluding ceremony at ICFFK, organized by the Kerala state council for child welfare in association with Kerala Chalachithra Academy, Kerala state film development corporation (KSFDC) and Balasahithya Institute. “They should be watching more films and studying them. It won’t be appropriate to evaluate their creations and awarding them,” he said.
Adoor hailed the children’s film festival as a great platform for screening movies exclusively meant for them. “Children watch a lot of movies but rarely do they watch movies which are actually made for them. Child welfare council could ensure that kids were able to watch movies meant for them. Films are being made in all parts of the country for children aged between 13 and 17. Even schools and childrens’ film societies have the required facilities to screen films for kids, but children are not shown films which suit their age and this should change,” he said.
Adoor also stressed the need to encourage kids to read books. “In some houses children are made to watch certain movies along with their family although such films are not meant for kids. In film festivals children should be trained on how to make films. The parents should also have a better idea about children’s films,” he said.
The film ‘U turn to the nature’, directed by Devukrishna S Nath, was chosen as the best film among four movies directed by children.
Governor P Sathasivam and his wife Saraswathi Sathasivam attended the festival on the concluding day. Governor said that the messages being conveyed by the festival will stay in the minds of children forever.
