Ludhiana: Taking jibes at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi started his address at a rally in Mullanpur on Wednesday with “Chowkidar chor hai” and urged people to shout back the slogan. He said this slogan was the new way to check mood of the people.
To strike a chord with the people of Ludhiana, Gandhi said, “Modi ne Ludhiana ka business nasht kar diya (Modi has destroyed the industry of Ludhiana). But I want to tell you that without ‘made in Ludhiana’, India cannot challenge ‘made in China’. Ludhiana is the centre of small and medium industry and of India’s industry as well, but did anyone gain out of the steps like demonetization and Gabbar Singh Tax (mocking GST)? Due to it, every month businessmen of Ludhiana have to fill 10 to 15 forms and income tax department harasses them. Ask any small businessman of Ludhiana or of any other state about demonetization, he will say that this step was just ‘pagalpan’ and nothing else.”
Taking about his manifesto, Gandhi said, “I want to tell the businessmen here that the Nyay Yojana promised by the Congress will not only benefit the poor, but also give a huge lift to small and medium-scale businesses and to youth as well. They will in fact gain more than the poor. Narendra Modi, during the past five years, has waived debt of Rs 5,55,000 crore only of 15 businessmen, but not a single rupee of Ludhiana’s businessmen and shopkeepers. And with GST and demonetization, Modi removed shopkeepers out of his way. Ludhiana’s small industrialists are the backbone of India, but PM aimed to wipe them off and give their trade to 15-20 big businessmen.”
