A godown where beedi leaves were stored was gutted in a fire on Monday night. Fire Department personnel from Arcot, Ranipet and SIPCOT rushed fire engines and put out the blaze in two hours.
Although the fire engines reached the spot on time, the leaves could not be saved as gusty wind fanned the fire. The godown had stocked more than 40 tonnes of beedi leaves.
A case has been registered and the cause of the accident is being investigated. District Fire Office sources said the value of the property is being ascertained.
The unit at Keezhvisharam on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway is owned by Sheik Ismail from Old Washermenpet, Chennai.
