A man has been taken to hospital after he was shot, reportedly by police, at a Sydney train station.

Paramedics were called to Campbelltown train station, in Sydney's west, at 2.45pm on Wednesday.

Three ambulance crews and one medical team attended the scene, where they treated a man for a gunshot wound. 

The man is believed to be in his 30s and was armed at the time. 

Witnesses at the scene claimed they saw a police officer holding a gun shortly before the man was shot.

He is currently on the way to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition, a NSW Ambulance spokesman told Daily Mail Australia. 

Police officers have cordoned off the area and remain on the scene. 

The man was believed to be armed, but police have reportedly secured the weapon.

The incident occurred just outside the train station in the bus interchange. 

Buses in and out of the area have been diverted to avoid the scene, Transport NSW confirmed.

People travelling via bus in the region are being advised that buses will not be stopping or picking people up from the Campbelltown station bus interchange, and will now be stopping on the other side of the road.

Trains have not yet been affected by the shooting.
