Why did the ducks cross the Gateway Bridge?
Ducklings and their brave mum received a police escort over the Gateway Bridge on Wednesday morning as tens of thousands of trucks, cars and motor bikes roared past on Wednesday morning.
The mother duck can be seen in this video leading her six ducklings very cautiously over the arched road bridge, one of Brisbane's largest.
They were all huddled against the left-hand cement wall on the uphill side of the Gateway Bridge where traffic headed from the Brisbane Airport side towards the southside.
At one stage the ducklings headed towards the police officer on a motorbike escorting them before he shadowed them back towards the wall and escorted them from the bridge.
RSPCA spokeswoman Alex Hyndman-Hill said the police deserved praise for doing the right thing by closing off one lane and protecting the ducklings as they walked over the bridge.
They were eventually collected by police and veterinary staff.
"It shows Queenslanders were doing the right thing by our beautiful animals," Ms Hyndman-Hill said.
"You wouldn't want squished ducks on the road would you," she said.
"I'm glad the police had the time and glad that they went out of their way to help the ducks and make sure that they were alright."
They were originally taken to the Green Spot vet clinic at Cannon Hill, she said.
"They have all been bought out to us here at the RSPCA headquarters at Wacol, where they all doing really well," she said.
"They are all going to go out for care tomorrow.
"It is very unusual that's for sure, but they are all safe now."
