Govt plans water troughs to quench animals’ thirst at veterinary dispensaries

Coimbatore: Cattle which come for treatment at veterinary hospitals and dispensaries in the district would now have respite from heat as the animal husbandry department has decided to set up water troughs to quench animals’ thirst in all the dispensaries in the district. Where there are no facilities for constructing troughs, they would put up water in drums for cattle and animals, officials said.
This was the first time the department has undertaken such an effort, regional joint director of animal husbandry A Chinnusamy said. “Cattle coming to dispensaries would be thirsty in this weather, so the department has decided to provide water for all cattle at dispensaries and hospitals,” he said.

There are 95 dispensaries, 14 hospitals, one big hospital and one polyclinic for animals in the district. Of these 25% already have water troughs, and at the rest of the facilities, water troughs would be constructed by the revenue department, Chinnusamy said.
“At places where there is no permanent water troughs, personnel have been providing water to cattle in buckets or drums. Not only cattle, even dogs which come to the facilities for treatment are provided water,” he added.
