The political temperature rose in UP a day after an alleged attack on Congress’s Rae Bareli MLA Aditi Singh and other leaders over a no-confidence motion against the local zila panchayat chairman.

While the lawmaker apprehended a threat to her life from BJP leaders and sought security, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rushed to Rae Bareli and denounced the incident as an ‘attack on democracy’.

The BJP has denied any role in the incident, saying vehicles in the MLA’s convoy overturned due to overspeeding. The Congress has approached the governor, urging him to intervene in the matter.

The attack took place on Tuesday when the MLA was on her way to oversee the voting for a no-confidence motion against zila panchayat chairman Awadhesh Pratap Singh, who is the brother of BJP’s Rae Bareli Lok Sabha candidate Dinesh Singh. She has alleged that she was attacked by Awadhesh Singh’s henchmen, armed with iron rods and bricks in Harchandpur area. An FIR was registered against Awadhesh and his brother Dinesh Pratap Singh on the complaint of zila panchyat member Rakesh Awasthi.
