The Union home ministry has extended the ban on Sri Lankan outfit Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for a further five years, noting that the activities of its remnant cadres, dropouts, sympathisers, supporters traced out recently in
Tamil Nadu suggest that the cadres sent to Tamil Nadu would ultimately be utilised by LTTE for unlawful activities.
LTTE will remain banned as an unlawful association until May 2024 under Section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967, as per a home ministry notification issued on Tuesday.
The notification stated that LTTE, even following its military defeat in May 2009 in
Sri Lanka, has not abandoned the concept of ‘ Eelam’ — an independent Tamil homeland — and was clandestinely working towards this cause.
