P.R.Pandian of Thamizhaga Cauvery Farmers Association launched a movement against giving land for the hydrocarbon project at Irulneeki near Kottur on Wednesday.

He declared open a bill board at the village. While warning that the entire State would become a field of protests in view of the Modi government’s decision to go ahead with its plans for hydrocarbon exploration, he urged the Chief Minister to approach the issue cautiously and maintain peace in the State by banning the project which would render more than 50 lakh acres of fertile lands useless.

Meanwhile, a group of women at Thirukalar staged a wailing demonstration on Wednesday to register their protest against setting up of oil wells at Thirukalar and nearby areas for the project.

The demonstration was organised by the Hydrocarbon Protest Committee formed at the panchayat level under the aegis of the Communist Party of India. The CPI had planned a human chain protest in Tiruvarur district opposing the project by roping in like-minded parties.
