MSC Physics likely to be started while add-on course in Food Preservation has already been approved for PGGCG-11

CHANDIGARH: Post Graduate Government College for Girls, sector 11 is likely to start MSC Physics this year while a new add-on certificate course in Food Preservation has been approved. There will be facility to do diploma next year and advance course in Food Preservation in 2021 after which students will have qualification to pursue post graduation course in same.

College is also likely to start MSC physics from this year. Anita Kaushal, principal told TOI said, “The procedure for final approval for starting MSC Physics will go through syndicate of Panjab University and is likely to come before admission starts next month. College is progressing in science stream in leaps and bounds. Department of Science and Technology has given us grant of Rs 80 lakh to hold science programs and chalk out science syllabus.”

About the add-on course on Food Preservation, she said, “The add-on course in Food Preservation will give students an additional skill and enhance their chances for better employability in future. We are providing 30 seats for the course in the beginning. If we get good number of applications, then the students will be enrolled for it on merit basis. The fee here is just Rs 2500 for full one year course, which in private sector will be two to three times costlier. This is the reason, we want our students to benefit from it in the campus .”

According to Umesh Bharti, faculty member of Zoology department and incharge of the add- on courses that the selected students would be trained to prepare different type of items with regard to chutneys, murabbas, chips etc and trained in the methodology to preserve them. They will be taught the ropes to start their own venture and the skills for networking. They will also know the important details about the chemical compositions of these food items. She was of the opinion that those who are passionate about the food can do the advance course in the subject and set up their home production as well.

“Among the add-on courses which were started last year, Event Management has been the most successful with all the 40 seats becoming full. The students learnt a lot by witnessing Confederation of Indian Industry organising their various events. CII will involve the students of Advance Course in the management of their events. before that, college will give the diploma course students opportunities to organise various college fests this year and learn from the experience, " said Bharti. She said that the students were given exposure to interact with the vendors who set up their stalls for various exhibitions such as Silk Fab etc to learn the nitty gritty of putting together these events.

Kaushal said that the college management is giving lot of thrust t towards skill development of the students . For this short term course in Spoken English has also been started and, another course in office management too was introduced on the initiative of Chandigarh administration.
