PUNE: A suspicious object resembling a hand-grenade was found near Air Force School, Viman Nagar, on Tuesday morning.

Officials from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) of Pune police diffused the material and sent samples to forensic laboratory, to ascertain its exact composition.

The Police said that as a precautionary measure, area around the school was searched. The school is located on the Air Force Station campus, near the Pune international airport. There are some residential quarters near the school.  According to the police, after the object was found near the playground of the school, a senior Air Force official contacted Pune police at around 9.25 am and requested for the BDDS team. Soon, police officials along with sniffer dog Virat reached the spot. The dog indicated presence of explosive.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Mitesh Ghatte said, “The BDDS team was called to the spot and the object has been defused. Prima facie though the outer structure is like that of a hand grenade, the material inside looks like the one used in Diwali firecrackers. For further confirmation, the material has been sent to forensic lab for analysis.”  The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
