The Samta Nagar police have arrested two Nigerian nationals for allegedly installing a skimming device at an ATM centre in Kandivali. The arrests were made after the police went undercover and disguised themselves as security guards.
Inquiries were initiated into the matter after Harshad Chavda, a media professional, found the device at the Yes Bank ATM on May 11. Working on the assumption that the people who had installed the skimming device would return to retrieve the data stolen through it, the police decided to lay a trap around the ATM kiosk.
“Two of our constables dressed up at security guards and stationed themselves at the ATM, while some other personnel took up positions in the area in plain clothes. Around 2 a.m. on May 12, one of the accused, later identified as Esahi Ogulen Seyi (34) entered the ATM. Our personnel saw him remove an ATM card but not swipe it, which raised suspicion,” senior police inspector Raju Kasbe, Samta Nagar police station said.
Mr. Seyi, who left in an autorickshaw, was chased and arrested.
His interrogation led the police to Kharad Rosi Maggie (37), who was arrested on Monday.
“A similar case was reported on Monday concerning ATM of yet another bank. We are trying to find out if the accused held are involved in that case as well,” Mr. Kasbe said.
