Coimbatore: A 30-year-old truck driver died after two trucks collided on Irugur rail over-bridge and fell off the 60ft-high bridge here in the early hours of Tuesday.
Police identified the deceased as Jayas Sasidharan, 30, of Alappuzha in Kerala. He was caught inside the driver cabin of the truck and succumbed to serious injuries on the spot, police said.
Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW-east) of the city police said the incident took place when Jayas was heading to Salem from Kerala with household articles. “Another truck laden with fruits was coming to Coimbatore from Bengaluru. On Irugur flyover, one of the truck drivers lost control over his vehicle and hit another truck coming from the opposite direction. Due to the impact of the collision, both the trucks fell off the bridge,” a TIW officer said.
“Jayas was unable to come out of the cabin and died. Another truck driver Ragavendra, 21, of Mettur in Salem, suffered minor injuries,” the officer said.
After passersby informed police, a team led by TIW sub-inspector P Manoharan along with a team of fire and rescue services personnel reached the spot, retrieved Jayas’ body and sent it to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
The TIW (east) police have registered a case against Ragavendra and further investigation is on.
