A drag queen who performs under the stage name Annie Depressant has been trolled online after confirming he would host a children's story time in a library.

Annie is a Melbourne performer who often makes appearances across the city, both in nightclubs and for children's events.

Despite the online backlash, Annie confirmed the event would go on, citing a great opportunity for children to experience diversity.

'It's an opportunity for children to come speak with me, I had kids talking my ear off about their own artistic endeavours last time,' Annie said.

'I would like to remind them that I am a person, everything they are saying is being said about a real person and there is nothing inherently inappropriate about being a drag queen.'

Annie has a working with children's check and no criminal record.

Annie said the event celebrates families, identity and embracing individuality.

'A lot of people have called me a trans woman, which is not true, I am a cis man,' Annie told the Star Observer

'I'm being accused of sexualising children… claims that I am a paedophile.'

'Nothing has ever been about saying 'change your gender' or 'be a gay person', it was 'accept yourself and love yourself'.'

Annie went on to say the event is not school-based, nor is it mandatory.

'Nobody’s being forced to come or forced to listen. It is perfectly acceptable for somebody to say ‘this isn’t for me’ and walk away, and I understand and respect that.'

While the child-friendly event has been heralded as a step forward and 'a great way to teach acceptance and tolerance rather than fear-fueled hate' by some, other parents are concerned about Annie's reputation in the adult entertainment industry.

Annie's 'nightclub persona' is described as 'a drunk', 'w***e', and a 'feel good drug' online.

'This is absolutely abhorrent. Children do not need to be read to by strange guys in dresses,' one person wrote online.

'Who would subject their children to this mental illness.'

'It's official, the world has gone mad.'

Whittlesea Library chose to remove their original post advertising Annie's appearance.
