Coimbatore: Residents of Masakalipalayam heaved a sigh of relief as the city corporation repaired the pothole-riddled road in their area after more than three years.
Recently, the city corporation carried out patch work to cover all the potholes on the 2.4km stretch of Masakalipalayam Main Road, which connects to Avinashi Road and G V Residency.
“The civic body has fulfilled one of our long-pending demands by repairing the road almost after three years when the residents had almost lost the hope in the corporation. For a few years, we need not worry about potholes or dust,” S Shivaraman, a resident of the area, said.
He said in the past they were not be able to stand on roadside even for a few minutes during the peak hours as the dust generated by moving vehicles would suffocate them. The stretch had at least one pothole every 50m.
Recollecting how the road was re-laid about a couple of years only to be cut to lay pipelines for underground drainage (UGD) project, he said the number of motorists falling has almost turned zero in the last few days after potholes were closed. With many schools located in the area, two-wheeler and four-wheeler traffic is heavy in the stretch.
“Without proper street lights for a few metres, driving on the road during night hours is always a nightmare. As Avinashi Road and Trichy Road are congested, motorists prefer using the Masakalipalayam Main Road to reduce travelling time,” R Vanathi, a commuter, said.
The corporation should also do patch work on spots temporarily closed with mud, she said, pointing out the portion near Masakalipalayam corporation middle school.
