The University of Mysore’s Department of Studies in Food Science and Nutrition will hold a workshop on personalised nutrition to tackle the disease burden arising out of obesity and diabetes.

Though the workshop, titled ‘From nutrigenetics to personalised nutrition’, is scheduled to be held at Manasagangotri on August 23 and 24, the last date for early bird confirmation is May 15. The deadline for registration, however, is June 30.

There will be no spot registration, said a statement from the organisers.

Nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics have the potential to play an important role in the healthcare system and for those seeking to understand the biology underlying disease and normal homeostasis, a condition in which the human body’s internal conditions are within normal limits, the statement said.

The organisers have emphasised the importance of genotype-based nutritional intervention, which is also called personalised nutrition, to prevent the population from becoming obese or overweight. Obesity is one of the important risk factors for development of diabetes and India currently shoulders 49% of the global burden of diabetes, the statement said.

The workshop aims to spread the knowledge of nutrigenetics and personalised nutrition to develop skills in genotype-based nutritional interventions.

Resource persons who had confirmed participation in the event include G. Bhanuprakash Reddy, head of the Department of Ocular Biochemistry, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad; Vimal Karani, assistant professor in Nutrigenetics, University of Reading, United Kingdom; Geeta Dharmatti, founder of Geeta Nutriheal Consultancy, Pune; Janani Tamilvanan, founder of Geneobe Wellness Centre and Institute of Nutrigenetics, Coimbatore; and Mudassir Azeez, professor in Community Medicine, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute.
