Dibrugarh: Five more persons involved in the brutal attack on a doctor in Rossell India Limited-owned Dikom Tea Estate were taken into police custody on Monday. With this, the total number of people arrested in the case so far has risen to 22.
"Altogether 22 persons involved in the incident have been arrested so far. We have identified all the culprits through a video footage of the incident. There will be a couple of more arrests. We are taking the matter very seriously. The accused have been booked under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC," said Dibrugarh additional SP Dhruba Bora.

On the other hand, the garden management has lifted the indefinite lockout in the tea estate from Monday morning. The lockout was imposed fearing deterioration of the situation following the assault. "Yesterday, we had a meeting with the delegates of ACMS (Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha) and ATTSA (Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association). They have assured us that there will be no repetition of the incident," said Samar Jyoti Chaliha, the manager of Dikom Tea Estate.
On May 6, Probin Chandra Thakur, the medical officer of Dikom Tea Estate, was brutally manhandled by a mob of garden workers following the death of a woman worker during a severe thunderstorm. The worker, identified as Jhalo Surjan, was crushed to death while plucking tea leaves when a tree got uprooted and fell on her.
