Honoring officers during Terre Haute ceremony

"stop the falling..stop the falling..

We must revalue the purpose of the law enforcement community."

It is national police week... law enforcment across the country are honoring the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty..

Good evening and welcome to news 10 nightwatch.

We have team coverage for you tonight..

News 10's sarah lehman is live with more on a vigil that happened right here in terre haute... and heather good is live in washington d.c.

Tonight... that's where law enforcement from across the country participated in a vigil... we start our team coverage right here in the valley..

Sarah tells us how local law enforcement are honoring fallen officers.

Patrece..rondrell just a few hours ago right in front of this statue of fallen officer brent long... a group gathered to remember terre haute officers and officers around the country who were killed in the line of duty.

< 168 police officers... 28 k-9 officers... that's how many police men, women and k-9's were killed in the line of duty in 20-18 one of those officers right here in terre haute.

"unfortunately we did we lost rob this year.

It's hard and having a spouse myself you never know if they're walking in the door.

So it's hard losing a friend a co-worker and to these guys it's their brotherhood."

That's why a group gathered in front of the flag pole and statue of fallen officer brent long and his k-9 shadow at terre haute police headequarters.

They were there to remember all officers who were killed last year and to show their support to t-h-p-d.

Todd haller has been an officer for 25 years now.

He says seeing people come out and support like this means a lot to him.

"we've seen the community step up and really support the people involved in public safety tremendously over the last probably 10 years.

They've come a long way when i first started the job we didn't see ceremonies like this and we didnt' hear about community support."

For john -- she just wants people in the community and country to always respect officers and to thank them every chance they get.

"lot of people don't understand and realize what our officers do on a daily basis they go out and they put their life on the line everyday."> this week is police week.

So all across the country communities are honoring their officers and the officers we lost in the line of duty last year.

The candlelight vigil here happened at exactly the same time as the vigil in washington d.c.

That's where news 10's heather good is right now... i'm going to send it over to her.

She's live in washington d-c at their candlelight vigil tonight.

Where officers across the country have gathered in remembrance.

Heather..?

Thank you sarah.

This vigil ended just an this vigil sarah.
