Two-day-old baby found dead in canal

Thiruvananthapuram: The body of a two-day-old boy was found in Pachikkodu canal at Vazhimukki in Balaramapuram on Tuesday.
A group of local youngsters, who went for a swim, saw the body floating around 2.45pm. They brought it ashore and informed the police.
Police shifted the body to the Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
“The exact reason for the baby’s death—whether by drowning or not—would be known after receiving the inquest report,” an officer attached with the Neyyattinkara police station said.
“The youngsters, who recovered the body, wrapped it in plastic and informed us. Apart from blood stains around the umbilical cord which suggests the baby is a newborn, there were no injuries on the body. There were also no missing cases of a baby registered in the station limits,” the officer said.

Police were also suspecting that the baby might have been abandoned by somebody soon after his death. They extended the probe to all neighbouring hospitals to find out any suspected cases.
Neyyattinkara police also requested anyone who has information regarding the baby to contact the police station.
