Capital witnessed a low voter turnout of 60.5% this time

Shakur Basti Assembly constituency recorded the highest voter turnout (68.7%) in Delhi on Sunday and the lowest percentage (42.13%) was recorded in Delhi Cantt Assembly constituency, according to data released by the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office.

Delhi had witnessed a low voter turnout (60.5%) on Sunday which was lesser than the 2014 Lok Sabha voter turnout of 65.09%.

Seven LS constituencies

Out of the seven Lok Sabha constituencies, New Delhi saw the lowest voter turnout with 56.91% and North East Delhi recorded the highest turnout of 63.45%.

Out of the Assembly constituencies, the bottom three were Delhi Cantt, New Delhi (52.58%), and Nangloi Jat (54.01%).

The highest voter turnout were recorded in Shakur Basti followed by Gokalpur (67.51%) and Krishna Nagar (66.83%).

Shakur Basti Assembly constituency in Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency is made of Paschim Vihar, Pitampura, Shakur Basti, Rani Bagh among other places.

On Sunday, the voter turnout percentage progressed steadily during the day, at an average of about 11% every two hours, in all seven constituencies. Chief Election Officer Ranbir Singh suggested that the reason for the lower turnout had to do with the timing of the election. He pointed out that during the 2014 Lok Sabha election, voting took place on April 10, a time of the year when the temperature is comparatively lower.

Mr. Singh said that he had expected a higher turnout this time as officials at his office and at the district level had worked hard on voter awareness and motivational campaigns. “The drop in turnout was disappointing,” he said on Sunday.

Since the announcement of the election dates, the CEO’s office and the district officials had undertaken several voter awareness programmes, including putting up posters and advertisements on public transport, billboards, messages on radio, exhibitions in malls and public parks, ‘awareness runs’ and Sufi concerts among other measures.
