Sankul hosts chess championship for visually impaired in Vadodara

VADODARA: Over 120 visually impaired children from across Gujarat participated in state level chess championship, hosted by Sankul, a public private partnership between Deepak Foundation and the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of Gujarat recently.
The city had witnessed a three day state level open chess team championship, held at Samaj Suraksha Sankul in association with the Gujarat Chess Association.
Visually impaired students of the age group 10-60 from across cities of Gujarat like Amreli, Kutch, Patan, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Banaskatha among others had participated in the event.
The team of Prince Akediwala, Darshan Pandya, Pravin Rathod and Nagin Vasava was announced as winner of the tournament, while the team of Akshay Pargi, Ronak Gohil, Ingar Ibrahim and Chirantan Mesariya stood second. And Jagdish Solanki, Lav Patel, Sauyam Shah and Raj Henish together bagged the third prize.
Apart from running a school for visually impaired, Sankul, is a residential institute for children with special needs and children in need for care. Annually, more than 200 children call Sankul their home.
“Our aim at Sankul is to nurture all children in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment through education, therapeutic interventions and family support services”, said Dr Ruchi Mehta of Deepak Foundation.
