MADURAI
A complaint of death of a woman due to alleged medical negligence has been lodged against Saravana Hospital, owned by P. Saravanan, who is the DMK candidate for Tirupparankundram Assembly constituency that is going for by-election on May 19.
Tallakulam police here on Monday late evening registered a case of suspicious death under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure based on the complaint lodged by R. Mariammal. Mariammal’s husband is a constable with Avaniapuram police station in Madurai city.
The complainant has said that her elder sister, Panju, 39, of Nilayur, was being treated for her ailment at Saravana Hospital for the last three months. On Sunday, Panju had thrown up following which the complainant and her brother Thiraviyam had admitted Panju to the hospital in Narimedu on Monday morning.
The patient, who had good health then, suddenly lost her consciousness after she was administered “some” injection and she was immediately rushed to the intensive care unit.
When Ms. Mariammal asked the hospital authorities about the sudden development, they were reportedly threatened. The complainant said that all of a sudden, the authorities told her to take her sister to the Government Rajaji Hospital as they could not afford treatment at the private hospital. After the siblings insisted that they could not shift the patient to the GRH without the authorities revealing the reason, they were given a certificate in the evening stating that the patient had died.
Ms. Mariammal has said that wrong medical treatment provided to Panju led to her death and sought action. The FIR has not named any accused.
