Ahead of campaigning for AIADMK’s P Mohan contesting from Ottapidaram Assembly constituency on Monday, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss condemned the Centre for its preliminary nod to Vedanta for implementing the hydrocarbon project.

Anbumani
Madurai:
The project, which Anbumani said would be against the interest of farmers, should be dropped by government and the Cauvery Delta region should be declared as ‘protected agriculture zone.’
Later, citing that DMK president MK Stalin’s dream would not be realised, he said the AIADMK-led front would win from all Lok Sabha constituencies and Assembly constituencies as well.
During his campaign, Stalin blamed his opponents and made baseless charges against them, but he never talked about developments made under his party’s regime and welfare of people. Further, he said people were angry at Stalin and hence would vote for the AIADMK-led front.
Terming that the meeting between Stalin and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was arranged due to fear of defeat in the polls, Anbumani said they were trying to sow the seeds for a third front.
He also said that the alliance formed by the Opposition is in a confused state. The Communist party, which is under the fold of DMK-Congress alliance, is against Congress and vowed to defeat Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who contested from Wayanad in Kerala, he noted.
People will not allow Centre to destroy agriculture: Vaiko
MDMK leader Vaiko on Monday warned the Centre that if hydrocarbon extraction project is implemented in the state, protests will intensify.
Vaiko, in a statement, said, “Hydrocarbon extraction will be a death blow to agriculture in the state and by giving permission, the Centre had planned to increase revenue for the corporates. People of Tamil Nadu will not help Centre to realise their plan and will protest in large numbers.”
The Ministry of Environment and Forest gave permission to Vedanta and ONGC to conduct investigation for extraction of hydrocarbon in two pockets in the state, from Marakkanam in Villupuram district to Cuddalore, covering 1,794 sq km and from Parangipettai in Cuddalore district to Pushpavanam in Nagapattinam district, covering 2,674 sq km.
The permission given at the time of elections had created various controversies and politicians from across the state criticised the Centre. Even parties in alliance with the BJP have demanded the Centre to withdraw the permission given to extract hydrocarbon in the state.
Vaiko said that hydrocarbon extraction is done through hydrofracking method in which hole will be drilled for ten thousand meters beneath the ground and again two km horizontally in all the directions. The extraction of hydrocarbon will destroy farming and the resources available for farming.
Both the state and Centre should drop the idea of permitting companies to extract hydrocarbon and if they fail to drop the project, a huge protest will erupt in the state, warned Vaiko.
PMK, an ally of the AIADMK-led front in the state, warned to launch widespread protests against the ruling party if the state government failed in its part to prevent the Centre from executing the project. The Ministry of Environment and Forest has granted permission to the Vedanta for drilling a total of 274 oil and gas exploration wells in the Cauvery Delta region of Thanjavur. The state government should not allow the Central government agency to execute this project under any circumstance, he said.
