Surat: A 55-year-old woman, who fell off her son’s motorcycle while riding pillion on a newly built speed breaker in Mota Varachha, succumbed to her head injury on Monday.
Her son was booked for causing death by negligence.
The woman’s son said the accident happened because he could not see the speed breaker as there were no white stripe markings it. Surat Municipal Corporation (SCM) officials said temporary markings with limestones were made when the speed breaker was built on May 7 and permanent stripes were painted after the accident on Monday night.
Jaya Dudhat, a resident of Shekhpur village near the city, died during treatment at SMIMER hospital in the early hours of Monday after she was admitted there upon falling off the motorcycle of her son Kalpesh, 29, near Gokuldham Society of Mota Varachha at around 9.30pm on Sunday.
Kalpesh, a diamond polisher, was booked and he would be arrested soon.
“I have been going by this road regularly and was not aware about a new speed breaker having been built in between. It was night and I could not see it from a distance as there were no white bands to help commuters identify it. I lost control and my mother fell off the two-wheeler,” said Kalpesh, a native of Amreli district. He had lost his father eight months ago.

SMC had built the speed breaker in consultation with traffic police on the requests of residents of nearby societies who had complained of frequent accidents there.
“Soon after constructing the speed breaker, we painted stripes on it with limestones. Permanent paint was applied on it on Monday,” an officer of SMC said.
