A female chef from Mumbai died in
Dubai due to complications that allegedly arose after a hip replacement surgery at a private hospital there. Betty Fernandes, a 42-year-old mother of two, had a congenital issue due to which her left hip was slightly displaced when she was born. Her family said she decided to go in for a hip replacement surgery under Dr Samih Tarabichi, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Al Zahra Hospital Dubai (AZHD). She had been admitted for the two-hour surgery at AZHD on May 9.
Not only is the
Dubai Health Authority (DHA) looking into a complaint filed by Fernandes' husband, but an official statement from the hospital stated: "This incident is currently being dealt with multi-level in-depth reviews as per the hospital, DHA and JCI (
Joint Commission International) guidelines. We will keep the patient's family updated."
