Hearing a petition that sought appropriate action against the sale of unlabelled edible oil in Sivaganga district, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Commissioner of Food Safety to take action purely based on merit.

The petitioner, M. Balaji, sought a direction to the authorities to take appropriate action against edible oil manufacturers and wholesale and retail vendors who were selling unlabelled edible oil through improper packages in Singampunari town panchayat of Sivaganga district.

He alleged that money minded people were indulging in selling adulterated edible oils without any label and proper packages. The edible oils of different qualities were mixed, irrespective of their variety, and sold, he said. Though complaints were lodged no action had been taken so far, he said.

The petitioner also sought disciplinary action against the Food Safety Officer of Singampunari town panchayat for failing to discharge his duty as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

A Division Bench of Justices K. Kalyanasundaram and R. Tharani, taking into account the submissions, directed the Commissioner of Food Safety to consider the petition and take appropriate action, purely based on merit.
