Hubballi: Three people including two children were killed when the roof of a mud house collapsed in Yaraguppi village on Monday late night.
The deceased are Yallavva Gadad, 53, Jyoti Meti, 9, Shravani Radhai, 4.
Two women were injured in the incident and they have been shifted to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi.
Kundgol police said that the house was in bad shape and its foundation had weakened. The inmates suffocated to death under the debris, added police.
Former CM Siddaramaiah visited the spot and consoled the kin of the bereaved family. He was accompanied by Congress candidate Kusumavati Shivalli.
The former CM said that though it was a heart-wrenching incident they cannot announce a compensation as the model code of conduct is in force.
Water resources minister D K Shivakumar too visited the house. He consoled the family members and assured all possible help once the model code of conduct is lifted.
An emotional DKS
remembers Shivalli
When Shivakumar came out of the house, he told leaders that late minister Shivalli too lived in a similar house. “I told him to rebuild the old house,” he recalled. But due to financial constraints the family has not been able to complete the house, the minister was informed.

He then went to see the late minister’s house. When he alighted from his car and saw the half-built house, he became emotional.
During his conversation with local leaders, Shivakumar said that Shivalli did nothing for himself. “People after becoming a corporator or gram panchayat member make money but Shivalli did not even build a house for his family. That was his simplicity. He never aspired for more. I put pressure on senior leaders to include him in the cabinet,” he recalled.
