Detectorists

The brilliance of Detectorists is the way it takes the tropes of, say, The Vicar of Dibley (quaint village, quirky characters) and uses that unthreatening scaffolding to create a poignant meditation on life for an ordinary man in the 21st century. As season two gets under way Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones) are back on the farm – the field they've had permission to go metal-detecting in for five years – only to discover it's about to be turned into a commercial solar farm, something they agree is both beneficial and necessary. Life's complicated. Luckily they have each other.
