In the upcoming academic year, education, intervention and assessment for differently abled children would be made easier with the use of Android applications.

Special educators and therapists are undergoing a two-day training programme by Samagra Shiksha to use a gamut of around 30 applications broadly categorised into assessment, early intervention, academic skills and general apps.

For instance, in one of the applications, an educator can teach the Tamil and English alphabet, by letting the student simply trace over each of the letters displayed on a tablet screen.

Using another app, children can identify various sounds, learn math, and other subjects. Some of the applications also help in assessing the development of the child who may be autistic, have visual impairment or other developmental challenges. There are even apps that provide first aid tips at times of emergency, provide vaccination alerts, which would come in handy especially while dealing with children with special needs.

Following the training programme, 62 special educators and 12 therapists would use these apps to help around 400 differently abled children at daycare centres and early intervention centres across the district.

S. Rajaselvi, District Coordinator of Inclusive Education, says that in addition to children studying at these centres, awareness of these apps would be generated at government, aided and other schools as well. This would help in ensuring early intervention in the children to lessen the impact of their condition, she added.
