Citroen concept showcases ideas for autonomous long-distance travel

The 19_19 concept's transparent capsule design was inspired by the world of aviation, Citroen says.

PARIS -- Citroen says its 19_19 concept takes inspiration from the worlds of aviation and interior design to offer the brand's vision of future full-electric and autonomous long-distance luxury travel.

The 19_19 has a  range of 800 km (499 miles), which Citroen describes as "extended mobility to escape from the cities."

In areas where the infrastructure allows it, the 19_19 can be charged by induction, either stationary or while in motion.

Citroen says two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, have a total of 340 kW of power and 800 Nm of torque. Zero to 100 kph (62 mph) takes five seconds.

Although the 19_19 is not designed as a fully autonomous vehicle, Citroen says the car will take over driving operation in certain situations, including on highways or in traffic jams.

Stylistically, the 19_19 is distinguished by its full-glass suspended cabin, which Citroen says resembles an aircraft fuselage and helicopter bubble cockpit; oversized 30 -inch wheels; and a visible subframe that displays the electric drivetrain and suspension.

The wheels, with a “floating” central hub, were developed with Goodyear and are integrated visually into 255/30 tires.

Citroen emphasized the technical aspects of autonomous and electric driving on the 19_19, including prominent lidar sensors on the roof and light diodes that indicate the activation of various components.

The 19_19 similar in size to a midsize SUV, at 4655 mm long, 2240 mm wide and 1600 mm high. Its wheelbase is 3100 mm. The raised cockpit module allows passengers a higher view of the road, Citroen says.

The 19_19 concept's cabin is styled as a living room with a sport-style driver's seat, a chaise longue for the front passenger and a wraparound sofa for rear passengers.

Citroen has paid particular attention to the suspension, seeking to eliminate the sensation for passengers of cornering on an angle. The wheels move independently of the suspended cockpit, and the tires are equipped with sensors that monitor road and weather conditions and transmit the data to the drivetrain.

Inside, the 19_19 is modeled after a living room, with each seat having a distinctive style, including a deeply bolstered sport-style driver’s seat, a chaise longue for the front passenger and a wraparound sofa for rear passengers.

Instead of an instrument cluster, relevant information is available on a heads-up display. Under the dashboard is a video screen than be used for entertainment when the 19_19 is in autonomous mode, similar to the Peugeot e-Legend concept from 2018. A transparent floor area allows passengers to watch the active suspension system at work. The single-spoke steering wheel -- a nod to Citroen’s past in cars such as the DS19 -- and pedals retract during autonomous driving.

A voice assistant equipped with artificial intelligence technology controls entertainment such as movies or apps, as well as the heating and ventilation, and cabin lighting.

The 19_19 is the second concept vehicle released by Citroen this year to commemorate the brand’s 100th anniversary. The other vehicle, the Ami_One, is an electric runabout meant for short-distance urban trips.

The 19_19 will have its public debut on Thursday at the VivaTech exposition in Paris.
