Huffman, teary, pleads guilty in college scandalIt's plot twist few, until recently, would have predicted for Felicity Huffman. The acclaimed actress appeared in Boston federal court Monday, fighting back tears as she pled guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud for her role in the largest college admissions scandal in U.S. history. Huffman, wife of celebrated actor William H. Macy, admitted she paid $15,000 to have someone secretly correct her daughter's SAT answers. Huffman entered the courthouse holding hands with her brother. Prosecutors recommended a four-month prison term for the actress. Her criminal pursuits - first exposed when the scandal broke in March - stand in stark contrast to her career highlights. Sprung from the Broadway plays of Pulitzer prize-winner David Mamet, Huffman nabbed an Oscar nomination in 2006 for her groundbreaking portrayal of a transgender woman in 'TransAmerica' - while simultaneously flexing her mainstream muscle as one of ABC's 'Desperate Housewives', for which she won an Emmy in 2005. The college scam now changes the script, peppered with public transcripts of Huffman's email and phone exchanges with Rick Singer, mastermind of the plot, who funneled bribes to coaches and paid proctors through his non-profit organization. Huffman is one of 50 people charged - 33 of them parents, including fellow actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannulli, both of whom plan to plead 'not guilty.' Huffman, in an April statement, said her daughter, quote, 'knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her.' Not surprisingly, the true-life college tale will become a book and TV series. No word on who will play either of the two actresses. | |||||
