Surprise Advice

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has advised the club to make a surprise move for Chelsea defender Reece James.

James has enjoyed a successful loan spell with Championship outfit Wigan Athletic, making 45 appearances.

“Recruitment is the biggest thing for any club now and I don’t think Klopp will go mad in the transfer market this summer,” Lawrenson said.

“But I tell you who I’ve seen - and I don’t think they could easily get him - the right-back at Wigan, on loan from Chelsea, Reece James.

“In that league he makes it look so ridiculously easy. I think he could make the step up. But of course he belongs to Chelsea at the moment.”

Busquets Struggling

Sergio Busquets says Barcelona are still struggling following their defeat to Liverpool last week.

The Spanish giants lost a 3-0 first-leg lead following a masterclass from the Reds at Anfield.

“We wanted to be at 100 per cent but it was a struggle because of what happened,” Busquets said of the defeat after the win over Getafe last night.

“We have to keep going and we have to focus on the Copa del Rey final. Hopefully the wound which the club the players and the fans have will heal.

“The challenge ahead isn’t a small one, either. The double’s no small thing but the wound from Liverpool is deep.

“We have to be grateful to the fans. It seems that we’re not living in this world at times but we are. We know how fans are feeling but their behaviour has been spectacular.

“They showed their disappointment at first, but after that they were 10 out of 10. We’re all p***ed off, but we have to keep going. There’s nothing else for it.”

Fernandes Linked

Liverpool are interested in Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes according to the Daily Mirror.

Fernandes, 20, has made 22 appearances this season and has impressed in his role as a deep-lying enforcer.

Tottenham and Manchester United are also eyeing the player with Spurs officials said to have opened talks.

Benfica rate him at £35m.

Fekir Latest

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has cast Nabil Fekir’s future into doubt by admitting one star will leave this summer.

Fekir almost joined Liverpool last year but the deal fell through in the final stage.

He has since captained Lyon to third in the Ligue 1 table, scoring nine goals and creating seven more.

Aulas, however, spoke to Le Journal du Dimanche last week and said: “If we qualify for the Champions League this season, we will only sell one player this summer.”

Fekir bagged three goals in this season’s edition of Europe’s premier competition and is one of the hottest properties in France.

Team-mates Ferland Mendy and Moussa Dembele have also been linked with moves away.

Wolves Reaction

So close yet so far.

Liverpool, for just over 80 seconds, were on course for their first ever Premier League title at Anfield yesterday until Manchester City galvanised to eventually defeat Brighton 4-1.

That doesn’t mean you can’t be incredibly proud of Jurgen Klopp’s side, though, and that feeling is reflected in the reaction from our writers James Pearce, Ian Doyle and Connor Dunn.

They watched the 2-0 win over Wolves and produced lots and lots of lovely content. Read it, please.

De Ligt Latest

Barcelona are worried that Virgil van Dijk is ‘tempting’ transfer target Matthijs de Ligt to join Liverpool.

The Reds, who knocked Ernesto Valverde’s side out of the Champions League last week, have been linked with a move for De Ligt but the Spaniards remain front-runners for his signature.

Mundo Deportivo - via Sport Witness - claim that there is now fear amongst Barca supremos that Van Dijk is trying to persuade his international team-mate to join him at Anfield.

Agent Virgil?
