MUMBAI: A 42-year-old lift technician died after falling into the elevator shaft from the 15th floor of a residential tower in Chunabhatti on Monday evening. A case of accidental death has been registered at Chunabhatti police station.

The incident took place at 4pm at Tower 2 of Continuum Complex, Central Garden, on Swadeshi Mill Road. “Ketan Bahirat and his co-worker were inspecting the service lift after their firm received a complaint that it was not operating. He went to the 15th floor and got into the lift to assess the fault, while his co-worker stood outside,” said a police officer. Minutes later, the co-worker heard some noise and knocked on the lift door several times. When he got no response, he ran to the ground floor and opened the lift door. The police said he found an injured Bahirat in the elevator shaft. The co-worker alerted the building residents, who, in turn, informed the police and fire brigade. Firemen brought Bahirat out of the elevator shaft and took him to Sion hospital, where the doctors declared him dead before admission.
A senior police officer said they are investigating how Bahirat fell into the elevator shaft and whether he had taken safety measures while working on the lift. The police informed Bahirat’s family, who live in Thane, about his death.
