The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has initiated an inquiry against 15 outsourced employees for not showing up for work and withheld their salaries until the investigation is complete, said officials on Monday.

Rao Bhopal Singh, executive engineer of the MCG, said that earlier this month he received complaints that 15 outsourced employees in the water supply division were not coming to work.

“On verifying the complaints with the entries in the attendance files, it was found that some outsourced employees had not been coming to work for 10 to 15 days consecutively. Subsequently, sub-divisional officer (SDO) Daleep Singh was appointed to compile a detailed report in the matter, after all the 15 employees submitted their responses,” said Singh.

Singh said that there was the possibility that employees could have been deputed at different points or engaged in official work on the days they have been found to be absent. Therefore, it was necessary to give them an opportunity to explain themselves.

“Their April salaries have been withheld until the SDO’s report clears them of the charges. If the report confirms they were absent, their services will be terminated,” added Singh.

A senior MCG official privy to the matter said that action against the employees would be only be issued after the 2019 general elections.

“There have instances in the past where sacked or suspended employees have cited political reasons for their discharge, in order to blow up the issue. To avoid the repeat of such a situation, a decision on this matter will be taken next month,” said the official.
