The Koala Is Now ‘Functionally Extinct’ Experts Say

Experts say that koalas are now “functionally extinct” and that there are no more than 80,000 in Australia.

????A report published in The Conversation says that koalas are highly vulnerable to deforestation, disease and the effects of climate change.

????And once a koala population falls below a certain point, they can no longer produce the next generation, leading to extinction.

????Being “functionally extinct” happens when a species no longer plays a significant role in the ecosystem, when a population that is no longer viable... ????Or when a small population is suffering through inbreeding and threatens its future in an area.

????Some koala populations have declined by as much as 80% due to climate extremes like severe droughts and heatwaves.

????The primary threat to Koalas is habitat loss, and unless its not protected, restored and expanded, we will continue to see a die off in koalas.??
