AHMEDABAD: Ravindra Nagar, 49, a resident of Sarvodaynagar in Khokhra, applied to various government institutions, including the CM Office, health minister’s office and chief justice of Gujarat high court on May 8 to give nod to his
euthanasia plea as he was out of money for his treatment and did not want to become a burden to his 88-year old mother.
On Mother’s Day (May 12), a number of organizations, including city mayor Bijal Patel, extended a helping hand.
Nagar lives with his mother Leela after his three sisters and a brother got married and left home.
Since 1991, Nagar is suffering from an unknown ailment due to which he is not able to move his limbs or perform daily activities. He spent all his money on treatment in Ahmedabad and Mumbai but his condition did not improve.
In the letter, Nagar mentioned that over the years his friends and family helped them financially but now they are out of funds and thus he does not want to pain his mother any more. His mother has to look after him like an infant even as she is also suffering from age-related complications.
Harshad Patel, a social worker from Amraiwadi, said that on Mother’s Day, several organizations and individuals came forward to help the duo. “City mayor Bijal Patel has assured the family that they would be enrolled in Ayushman Bharat and would get proper treatment,” he said.
