If we could build the perfect Southern food subscription box, here's what would be in it
Subscription boxes deliver everything from perfectly crafted meals to clothing, right to your front door. We started wondering what might be in a subscription box that contained the South’s best food products, so we came up with what would be our ultimate version.
Ours would contain five of the South’s most scrumptious food products, and the best part is you'd never have to leave the house. Unfortunately this is kind of a fantasy league subscription box for now, so we can only dream, but at least they’ll be delicious dreams!
Biscuits from Mama’s Boy in Athens, Georgia
The South has some delicious biscuits, and one of our favorites is from Mama’s Boy in Athens, Georgia. We would love to indulge in these massive, square-shaped biscuits at brunch without having to make a road trip. Mama’s Boy biscuits are yummy on their own, smothered in sausage gravy or served with cheesy grits and scrambled eggs.
Grits from Anson Mills
We'd love to have a bag of one of Anson Mills's six beautiful varieties of grits each month. The South Carolina company prides itself on growing “heirloom Southern dent corns.” In our subscription box, we would love to use the Antebellum coarse white or yellow grits to make Southern Kitchen’s cheesy grit fritters or Delia Champion’s creamy dreamy white cheddar grits. Bacon Jam
Bacon goes on and in everything in the South, but if you want to step up your bacon game, bacon jam is the way to go. The savory condiment can be put on burgers, swirled into mashed potatoes or added to grilled cheese. TBJ Gourmet offers a few flavors — like sweet chili bacon and black pepper bacon — that would make for some great experiments in your kitchen.
Fried Chicken
It’d be too hard for us to pick only one type of fried chicken in the South to put in our subscription box, so we would to bring you (and ourselves) fried chicken from a different Southern hot spot each month. Each month we would rotate, letting subscribers indulge in fried chicken from places like Mary Mac’s Tea Room in Atlanta, Georgia, Willie Mae’s Scotch House in New Orleans, and Husk in Nashville, Tennessee.
Bourbon
There'd be no need to run to the liquor store the next time you'd want to make an Old Fashioned. In our dream subscription box, we would love to include a different Southern bourbon each month. From big names to small-batch, nothing below the Mason-Dixon would be off limits.
