Chennai:
The increased prevalence of swine flu was reported in children below 14 years earlier this year; most of these cases were from Chennai, Vellore, Madurai and Virudhunagar districts.
Tamil Nadu is not alone in seeing a spike in the number of cases. Other southern States also recorded a large number of cases, with Karnataka recording the highest (1,523 cases and 56 deaths). Telangana had 1,177 cases and 18 deaths, while Kerala recorded 419 cases and 12 deaths and Andhra Pradesh reported 300 cases and 12 deaths.
“Swine flu is under control now. The risk of high infection was mainly due to Western districts reporting a large number of cases. There were many cases where the patient travelled to neighbouring states and most likely carried the infection,” said Director of Public Health Dr K Kolandaisamy.
Hospitals have been instructed to carry out disinfection activities, especially at the out-patient blocks. District health officers are also promoting proper hand wash on field visits, he added.
The death toll due to swine flu in the country has reached to 931, while more than 24,456 cases recorded till May 5. Rajasthan has the highest number of cases with around 4,990 cases and 200 deaths, while Gujarat so far has recorded 4,765 cases and 149 deaths.
Till May 5 this year, 383 cases and two deaths due to swine flu have been reported in the State, including around 200 cases in March alone. However, the count has reduced subsequently since then, with 98 cases being reported from March to May.
