NOIDA: The Noida Authority on Sunday set a target of recycling 100% of the water generated from its sewage treatment plant (STP) to make Noida a zero-discharge city. The initiative comes after Noida had kicked off a campaign on April 16 to treat
horticulture waste through indigenous organic
compost pits across the city’s parks and green belts.
As part of the plan, the STP in Sector 168, which has 50 million litres per day (MLD) water capacity, will be scaled up to 100 MLD by May 15 so as to make it fully functional and cater to the increasing number of upcoming highrise apartments and green stretches.
While Authority officials visited the site on Sunday, they maintained that laying of pipes has been completed at the plant from where treated water will be used to irrigate green areas and parks of the neighbouring sectors 91, 93, 137, 143, 143A and Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad
green belt.
“We have been rigorously working for months to provide maximum utilisation of treated water from STP plant located in sector 168 for irrigating purposes at upcoming establishments in the area, such as highrise apartments, Bio-Diversity Park and Medicinal Park in Sector 91, green belts and dust-free zones in sectors 137, 143, 143 A, and the FNG road. It will also cover parks, green belts and dust-free zones of sectors 82, 85, 88, 91, 92. The connectivity of pipelines has been completed in these areas and the process will begin by May 15,” said Rajeev Tyagi, general manager, Noida Authority.
With this move, the Authority aims to ensure that Noida reduces its dependency on ground water/fresh water for horticulture purposes and does not discharge any waste water into the Yamuna, which is already reeling from severe water pollution primarily caused by discharge of pollutants and untreated water from drains before it enters Noida.
According to Tyagi, the vision for self-sustainable and economically viable city was conceived by CEO Alok Tandon earlier this year for which he had set targets across departments such as water, health, sanitation, horticulture and infrastructure and undertakes periodic review meetings on the same.
