BENGALURU: Irom Sharmila, civil rights and political activist from Manipur, gave birth to twin baby girls at a hospital in Bengaluru on International Mother's Day on Sunday.
Sharmila delivered the babies - Nix Shakhi and Autumn Tara - through a C-section delivery at Cloudnine Hospital in
Malleswaram.
"Irom and her husband Desmond welcomed their bundles of joy on Mother's Day through a C-section delivery conducted today at 9.21am," said Nitin Nag, regional director (south), Cloudnine Group of Hospitals.
Dr Sriprada Vinekar, obstetrician & gynaecologist at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, said: "Twin 1, weighing 2.16kg, was born at 9.21am and twin 2 with a weight of 2.14kg was born at 9.22am. The babies and the mother are doing well."
Sripada said it was a coincidence that Sharmila delivered the babies on Mother's Day. "She was only 35 weeks into her pregnancy and we had chalked out a delivery date sometime next week. However, she was admitted to the hospital around 6pm on Saturday evening and we decided to do the procedure the next day. It was a smooth pregnancy and delivery and the parents said they have always wanted girl children," she added.
Sharmila was referred to the Bengaluru hospital by a friend and has been undergoing regular consultations, tests and checkups in the city over the nine months of her pregnancy.
