Good physique, aggression, speed, control, swing, variation, presence of mind... You level someone a very good fast bowler when all these fit in one frame. Jasprit Bumrah’s name comes to mind instantly for he uses all these qualities at different points of the game or sometimes combines them all in one over to snatch improbable wins for his side on a regular basis. But Bumrah also possesses something which very few fast bowlers have in the modern game – a heart of gold well complimented by an icy cool mind. Bumrah gave a first-hand account of both during the nerve-wracking IPL final between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, which his side MI won by 1 run to clinch their fourth IPL title.

Things were different in the penultimate over though. Bumrah, after bowling five terrific balls went for the back of a length delivery to Jadeja. It was a nightmare for the left-hander, who had just walked into the crease after Bravo’s departure. The ball fizzed past his bat before Jadeja could even react, he had no clue. But unfortunately for Mumbai Indians, neither did wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock.

The ball burst through de Kock’s hands in what seemed a fairly regular take and raced away to the boundary for four byes. Nothing short of a sin at that point of time. Those four precious runs brought CSK’s equation down to only 9 runs from 6 balls.

Bumrah should have been furious, he should have flung his arms in disgust and perhaps would have been excused even if had to share a few ‘words of wisdom’ with his wicket-keeper. But he did none of that, he was disappointed alright but he did not let it get the better of him. Instead, he walked to de Kock, who was perhaps searching for a hole to dive in anyway, wrapped his arms around the South African’s shoulders and consoled him with a broad smile.

All of this was took place when the last over was yet to be bowled, CSK were still the favourites with just 9 required from 6 balls.

As it turned out, Malinga bowled a dream last over to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for MI.

Bumrah’s great gesture drew praise from all quarters.

That was actually not the only occasion when Bumrah gave an account of his maturity. In the 17th over of the match, Rahul Chahar at deep square-leg dropped Shane Watson off Bumrah’s bowling. But there was no sign of anger from Bumrah. He just smiled and walked back to his mark. If Chahar had taken the catch then the match might not have gone so close. Bumrah and millions of MI fans however, would like to believe that ‘all’s well that ends well.’
