PUNE: The nakabandi operations in the city are yielding positive results in catching habitual traffic offenders who are being identified due to the One State One Challan project.

A Mumbai-registered Mahindra Scorpio was nabbed by head constable Rajendra More of Koregaon Park traffic division in the city on Monday and a pending fine of Rs11,800 was recovered from the owner.
According to deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh, the vehicle had 11 speeding offences, some were of violating no parking rule and for stopping on the zebra crossing. The total dues of Rs11,800 were recovered from him under sections 112/83, section 15/117 and section 119 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
More said, “We told the driver to stop at the side after the signal, as part of the nakabandi operations. On entering the registration number of the vehicle on the hand-held device, we saw that several offences were pending. The maximum offences were of speeding captured by the speed guns on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. A driver was behind the wheel while the owner was seated in the car. The driver checked the offences and informed the owner who readily paid the fine.”
More added that the owner appreciated the system and the efforts as he has seen similar systems abroad.

Deshmukh said, “This is the beauty of the One State One Challan system. Any vehicle which is guilty of violations in any part of the state can be held accountable wherever the vehicle is caught,” Deshmukh said.
While the Scorpio was caught for speeding, a local Activa rider was caught on May 11 in the Faraskhana division for 24 pending challans. Police constable Mohan Bhapkar, who caught the rider, said, “We had a regular nakabandi near Budhwar Chowk from 2pm to 5pm. We stopped the Activa and found 24 challans for helmetless riding pending, most of which were captured through the CCTV cameras in the city. I told him that he has to pay the fine as per section 129 of the MV Act, 1988. He knew there were e-challans pending against him and he paid the Rs12,000 fine without arguing.”
