The best places in India to take your mother out on Mother’s Day 2019
- by Prachi Joshi
Every year, Mother’s Day serves the perfect excuse to show the most important woman in your life just how much you appreciate her presence. We compile everything that’s new and happening in the food scene in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata to help you decide where to book your table or place your order

Hectic lives and rushed timelines leave us with little to no time to actually catch up with the people closest to us. Remind your mother that she’s not taken for granted by spoiling her silly with a lavish meal, taking her out for an evening full of drinking and dancing or just ordering in a delicious lunch. Scroll ahead for Vogue’s list of the best places to celebrate Mother’s Day with your mom this year.
The Latin Mess
It may be a tiny 12-seater, but The Latin Mess is big on flavours. Sink your teeth into LatAm favourites like Empanadas, Arepas (Colombian corn burgers), Yuca Fries, Plantain Chips and more. The restaurant’s dark wooden accents, warm colours and Aztec panels will transport you straight to South America, as will their Tres Leches (milk cake).
Address: The Latin Mess, Shop No 3, Aruna Nivas, Pali Mala Road, Pali Hill, Bandra West, Mumbai. Tel: 022-26005792
Taiki
Our love affair with East Asian cuisine continues with Indiranagar’s latest entrant. Taiki’s decor is appropriately minimalist, and its modern Asian menu has Japanese and Korean influences. Expect high-quality Sushi, Gyoza, Bento lunchboxes, Gimbap (Korean seaweed rolls), Katsu Curry, Ramen, Bibimbap and more. End your meal by giving your sweet tooth a treat with Bingsu, a Korean snowflake dessert made from milk shavings with a choice of flavours like chocolate, strawberry, litchi, Oreo, and more.
Address: Taiki, 656, 100 Feet Road, Stage 1, Indiranagar, Bengaluru. Tel: 080-43703820/49652196
Arbab
Levantine cuisine seems to be the flavour of the season, with Arbab joining the burgeoning list of restaurants serving Middle Eastern and Lebanese fare in the city. Their Lebanese-style breakfast with crispy Falafel, fresh Labneh, Hummus, Ful Modamas (fava beans with herbs & spices), and scrambled eggs is a must-try. Taste the streets of Beirut with Shawarma and Manakish (flatbread). Wind up your meal with sweet Knafeh (noodle pastry layered with cheese) and a cup of Moroccan Tea or Turkish Coffee.
Address: Arbab, Plot No. 117, Shop No. 4, 28th Road, Bandra West, Mumbai. Tel: 022-26410000
East India Room, Raajkutir
Located inside the boutique heritage hotel Raajkutir, East India Room brings back the memories of Bengal Renaissance with a healthy dose of the British Raj thrown in. The cuisine is inspired by the kitchens of pre-independence zamindars and infused with British, French, Dutch, and Portuguese influences, so you have the old school Prawn Cocktail, the street food staple Dhakai Porota, Beckty Meuniere (purportedly Ray’s favourite), Mutton Dak Bungalow, and much more on offer.
Address: East India Room, Raajkutir, 89C, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Sarani, Kankurgachi, Kolkata. Tel: 033-30991335/6289461972
White Peacock Kitchen & Bar
Considering the current focus on regional Indian cuisine, the Malvani and Goan menu at Khar’s recently opened White Peacock Kitchen & Bar comes as no surprise. Of course, there are some crowd-pleasing North Indian and Tandoori dishes thrown into the mix as well. Try the Prawns Goan Curry, Veg Vindaloo and Kolambi Bhaat. The bar serves alcohol by the quarter, and also offers Indian-influenced cocktails like the vodka-based Kala Khatta and the rum-based Tadka Nimbu Pani.

PUMA Shuffle
In a city known for its vibrant nightlife, PUMA Shuffle is another swinging spot on Bengaluru’s nightlife scene. What is the friendly neighbourhood bar Watson’s during the week, transforms into a cool, pop-up street-style bar over the weekends. This high-energy creative space celebrates live alternative music in its psychedelic pink, purple, and blue ambience.

With peppy music and a convivial atmosphere, The XIIth Floor is a new watering hole in suburban Mumbai. Ambience is dark and rustic with a massive, vintage-style bar that serves up some innovative cocktails like Achari Mojito (signature rum-based cocktail) and Desi Masala Cocktail (spicy vodka cocktail with guava juice).

Biryani By Kilo
For your next party, throw a biryani feast with Biryani By Kilo, Delhi’s popular delivery service that recently expanded to Mumbai. There’s both the Hyderabadi-style Kacchi Biryani and the Lucknowi Pukki Biryani on offer, not to mention the melt-in-the-mouth Galouti Kebab, assorted kormas and curries, and Phirni to end the meal. All biryanis come in individual earthen haandis with accompanying angeethis for that perfect smoky flavour.

Mandana’s Kitchen
Iranian model and former Bigg Boss contestant Mandana Karimi’s yearning for home made her set up Mandana’s Kitchen. The delivery kitchen has been wowing the Mumbai crowd with authentic Iranian fare like Chelo Kebab, Joojeh Kebab, Berry Pulao and Mirza Ghassemi (grilled aubergine dip). Karimi maintains the authenticity of her food by bringing ingredients like sumac, berries and loomi (dried black lemon) from Iran. Currently closed for expansion, the kitchen will reopen for orders around mid-May. Order via Scootsy, Swiggy, and Zomato
The Mighty Slice
If you love pizza, you’ll adore Kolkata’s new delivery service that brings a New York-style slice right to your doorstep. L’Éclair Studio
Perfectly made éclairs—with a light choux pastry stuffed with an airy cream filling—are a tough find in Mumbai. So Khar’s shiny new L’Éclair Studio certainly makes our hearts sing. There’s the usual Dark Chocolate, Nutella, Coffee, of course, but it’s the Lavender Éclair and Pistachio Crumble Éclair that we keep coming back for. Apart from éclairs, the studio also offers profiteroles, tarts and cakes. Order via Scootsy or on 9867586336
Blendorama
Thought the freakshake craze is over? Think again. Blendorama’s zany creations like their Bubble Gum Xpress Freakshake and Cosy Caramel Freakshake are sure to satisfy any dessert lover. Other quirky menu items include Wonuts (a combination of waffles and doughnuts), Cookie Shots and Browniewich. Don’t miss the Candy Floss Ice Cream Cone with fresh candy floss in a waffle cone topped with ice cream of your choice.

Nara
In order to add that extra touch of style, restaurants in South Bombay are always finding architectural marvels and turning them into restaurants. An addition to this list is Nara, which has expanded from its BKC branch to the Amarchand Mansion in Colaba. The ambience blends perfectly with authentic age-old Thai cuisine, and hits the mark of striking a deep sense of comfort as the food here is true to origins and flavours. Do try the mandatory Morning Glory appetiser. Plus, the Nara menu also makes the otherwise boring salads exciting. Be it the classic papaya salad or the Yum Woon Sen (spicy glass noodle salad), nothing here will disappoint you. And both us and Nara recommend their Khao Phad Samunprai (butterfly pea rice) too.
Address: B-1, Amarchand Mansion, 16 Madame Cama Road, Colaba, Mumbai. Tel: 022-61378080
