IPL 2019 Final, MI vs CSK: Shane Watson swears on field, Ian Bishop apologises to viewers
IPL 2019 Final, MI vs CSK: Lasith Malinga bowled a steep bouncer during the sixth over of the Chennai Super Kings innings and Shane Watson was caught on the mic using expletives.
cricket Updated: May 12, 2019 23:44 ISTIt is not uncommon for cricketers to swear on the field but when it is caught on the mic, it turns into an embarrassing situation for both the players and the broadcasters. That was exactly the case during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 final between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on Sunday.
During the sixth over of the CSK innings, Lasith Malinga bowled a steep bouncer and Watson was caught on the mic shouting ‘F*****ng Wide’. It was quite clear and commentator Ian Bishop apologised instantly to the viewers.
Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by one run in a nail-biting Indian Premier League final on Sunday to claim a record fourth title.
After Shane Watson had hit a fierce 80, Chennai needed two runs off the final ball to overtake Mumbai’s 149-8 but Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga bowled Shardul Thakur lbw to claim the landmark win.
Kieron Pollard smashed an unbeaten 41 off 25 balls to set up the Mumbai total in Hyderabad. Watson batted through the Chennai innings until he was run out in the final over, smashing four sixes and eight fours.
Tahir pipped compatriot Kagiso Rabada to emerge as the highest wicket-taker, winning the coveted ‘Purple Cap’.
Incidentally, Tahir, at 40, also became the oldest player to win the cap.
The ace wrist spinner edged past Rabada, who turned out for Delhi Capitals before injury curtailed his campaign, when he flummoxed Mumbai Indians’ Ishan Kishan in the final of the cash-rich league, for his 26th wicket.
